Create a Cutting Garden

A cutting garden is a plot dedicated to flowers you cut and bring inside.

Choose flowers that bloom all season. Zinnias, sunflowers, dahlias, cosmos.

Plant in rows. Cutting gardens are functional, not pretty. Rows make harvesting easy.

Plant successions. Sow new seeds every few weeks. You get continuous blooms instead of one big flush.

Cut in the morning. Flowers are most hydrated then. Cut at an angle and put straight into water.

The more you cut, the more they bloom. Cutting encourages new growth.

Strip the lower leaves before putting in a vase. Leaves in water rot.

A cutting garden gives you fresh flowers all summer. It is the best value in gardening.
